RC jets are one of the fastest types of airplanes you can fly. Since R/C jets travel at such high speeds, beginner pilots should not fly them, and should go with either an electric or nitro powered rc airplane.

Ok, so there are three types of R/C jet airplanes available on the market today.

If you are a beginner and still decide you want to fly an R/C jet, you should go for a pusher jet. Pusher jets are the slowest, and easiest, of all the radio controlled jets. Please read on for more information.

Pusher Jets

Pusher jets have a propeller in the back that “pushes” the airplane through the air. Usually pusher jets are hand launched and much slower then ducted and turbine fan jets. If you need an entry level jet to learn from, a pusher jet is perfect for you.

Ducted Fan Jets

Ducted fan jets consist of a high powered fan engine that operates in a duct. This type of jet has become a very popular choice recently, mainly because of its quietness and smooth operating.

Jets with a ducted fan engine also go really fast. For the pilot who has done it all, and wants more, ducted fan jets offer a new challenge to piloting.

Flying Model Jets

You do not have to be an expert to fly model jets, but you should have some experience in flying a high performance rc airplane. If you are completely new to the hobby and need to learn to fly an R/C jet airplane, then you should contact a instructor at a local flying club near you, or like I said above, get a pusher jet. RC jet airplanes have its advantages and disadvantages. One major advantage I think is the fact that wind does not really affect your flight experience with a rc jet.

Why you ask? It’s because jets are so fast and sleek, they just bust right through the wind. A major disadvantage to rc jet airplanes is you need more airspace to fly. Since they move so fast, when you turn, you need lots more room.

Tips

• Proper size tail cone for the fan
• Proper inlet shape with clean airflow
• Proper Airfoil shape
• Wing Sweep
• Smooth surface
• Incidence and general clean design

If you follow those guidelines you should be able to get top speeds from your jet.

Starting a gas rc jet is not hard, and directions for starting the jet come with it. Depending on the fan, you would start the engine with either a starter extension or a belt start.

When flying a gas r/c jet, use a good quality fuel with enough oil in it. This is true of any high performance application on any model airplane engine, except for electric powered airplanes, which require no fuel at all. Also, please keep in mind speed is in RPM's, so the higher the RPM's, the higher the lubrication demand.

If you are not confident in setting up for high performance, then my advice is to fly your jet a little slower until you gain the knowledge to go for the RPM's without blowing your engine.

A quality made and well-designed rc jet is usually more stable then a regular rc airplane, but sometimes the jet may be to heavy for the engine powering it. So you will want to make sure you get the right engine for the size and weight of your rc jet.

What else will you need?

A basic rc jet needs the model jet itself, radio transmitter, motor (ducted, turbine, pusher, etc.), motor controller, battery pack or fuel, and a charger or ignition system.
